The Crow reboot with Bill Skarsgård takes flight at Lionsgate as part of an eight-figure domestic deal

Date:

Lionsgate is forking over eight figures for the domestic rights to Rupert Sanders’ The Crow reboot starring Bill Skarsgård.

Lionsgate is resurrecting The Crow reboot after prolonged difficulties taking flight. Under an eight-figure domestic deal, the studio is ready to give the reimagining of the 1994 cult classic the effort it deserves. Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the HuntsmanGhost in the Shell) directs, with Bill Skarsgård (Boy Kills WorldJohn Wick: Chapter 4) and musician FKA twigs (Honey BoyThe King’s Man) leading the cast.

Based on the comic book series created, written, and illustrated by James O’BarrThe Crow tells the story of Eric Draven, a tortured soul brought back to life by a crow after the brutal rape and murder of his wife, Shelly Webster. Returned from the dead, Draven channels the regenerative powers of the crow to get revenge on the criminals responsible for his pain and torment. Alex Proyas directs the 1994 cult classic, starring Brandon Lee as Eric Draven, with Michael Wincott, Rochell Davis, Ernie Hudson, David Patrick Kelly, and Bai Ling.

AA Media Finance brokered the deal for the film’s domestic rights. John Biondo arranged the details on behalf of Lionsgate, with the deal finalized at the Toronto Film Festival on Wednesday night. The script hails from Oscar nominee Zach Baylin (King Richard) and Will Schneider. Laura Birn (VoidA Walk Among the Tombstones), Sami Bouajila (The SiegeDays of Glory), and Jordan Bolger (Tom and JerryThe Woman King) also star. Sanders shot The Crow reboot on location in Prague and Munich.

“We appreciate what The Crow character and original movie mean to legions of fans and believe this new film will offer audiences an authentic and visceral reinterpretation of its emotional power and mythology,” said Lionsgate’s Executive VP of Acquisitions and Co-Productions, Charlotte Koh. “To work with a creative team led by Rupert’s unparalleled visual style and storytelling and with a producing team who have made some of the most popular and impactful films of the last several decades is a true privilege.”

“The original film left an indelible mark on our culture that lives on,” added the producers in a joint statement. “We are thrilled to bring a new adaptation for today’s audiences that respects this legacy. Rupert has masterfully brought new dimensions to create a contemporary universe for this timeless saga of undying love, and we can’t wait to share this vision with film audiences.”

1994’s The Crow is one of my Top 5 favorite films. I’m curious to see what Sanders brings to the table and Skarsgård’s portrayal of the eternal Gothic warrior. Bring it on!
