Save the Green Planet remake confirmed: Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons to star in Yorgos Lanthimos project

Emma Stone will be reteaming with Yorgos Lanthimos, as well as Kinds of Kindness co-star Jesse Plemons for a Save the Green Planet remake.

A little while ago, a hot rumor suggested that Emma Stone would be re-teaming with director Yorgos Lanthimos a remake of the South Korean classic, Save the Green Planet. Less than twenty-four hours after the triumphant Cannes premiere of their follow-up to Poor Things, Kinds of Kindness comes official word that the movie is indeed happening. The movie, which is now titled Bugonia, will also re-team Stone with her Kinds of Kindness co-star Jesse Plemons, whose performance in the film is generating awards buzz.

Here’s the official synopsis from distributor Focus Features:

Two conspiracy obsessed young men kidnap the high-powered CEO of a major company, convinced that she is an alien intent on destroying planet Earth.

The remake is written by Will Tracy, a writer on HBO’s Succession and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. Tracy also co-wrote the genre film The Menu.

Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe at Element Pictures are producing the new film alongside CJ ENM, Emma Stone’s Fruit Treet and Ari Aster’s Square Peg.

Save the Green Planet, which came out in 2003, was directed by Jang Joon-hwan, and is considered one of the pivotal films that led to the explosion in popularity of South Korean films, with it playing to raves at various film festivals and developing a cult following in North America. In a press release, Peter Kujawski, Chairman of Focus Features noted, “Yorgos Lanthimos is a cinematic visionary with a singular style that has captivated audiences worldwide. We could not be more excited to partner with him, Emma and the incredible teams at Element, Square Peg and CJ ENM to reimagine this twisted and darkly funny story.”
