Donald Glover would still love to return to play Lando Calrissian and teases that he’s been “talking about it” with Lucasfilm.
Although Solo: A Star Wars Story wound up becoming the first box office bomb of the franchise, the film has a passionate legion of fans eager for Lucasfilm to continue the story. One of the highlights of the movie’s highlights was Donald Glover’s portrayal of Lando Calrissian, and despite talk of a Lando TV series, Glover has yet to return to the franchise.
While speaking with GQ, Donald Glover stated that he would “love to play Lando again. It’s a fun time to be him.” The actor also teased that they’ve been “talking about it,” but that’s as much as he can say “without [Lucasfilm president] Kathleen Kennedy hunting me down.”
One of the projects Lucasfilm teased in December 2020 was an event series for Disney+ that would have seen everyone’s favourite scoundrel Lando Calrissian return. Justin Simien, creator of the critically-acclaimed Dear White People and a huge Star Wars fan, was developing the story. We haven’t heard all that much about the potential series since then (and several of the other projects announced at the same time have been scrapped), but Donald Glover is still down to return as Lando Calrissian, provided it’s done the right way.
“It just needs to be the right way to do it,” Glover said. “Now, time is precious. I think everybody’s like, from the past couple years with this pandemic shit, has really had people experience time in a way where they’re like, ‘Well, why am I [doing this] … I should be around oranges.’” I should note here that the interview takes place in an orange orchard. “People kind of realized that their time was valuable,” Glover continued. “You only get so much. So I am not interested in doing anything that’s just going to be a waste of my time or just a paycheck. I’d much rather spend time with people that I enjoy. So it just has to be the right thing, which I think it could be. Lando is definitely somebody I’d like to hang out with.” Will the Lando series ever happen? With the amount of Star Wars projects that have been scrapped over the years, I’ve learned not to get my hopes up about any of them, but it would be fun to see Glover as Lando once again.
