Andrew Garfield remembers his time returning as Spider-Man in No Way Home as one that had no pressure whatsoever.
When Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire suited up to reprise their interpretations of Spider-Man in 2021’s No Way Home, it was like the Spider-Man meme come to life. Heck, Marvel even took it a step further when promoting the home video releases last year, taking full advantage of the opportunity. But for a lot of us, seeing Garfield, Maguire and Tom Holland sling it up on the big screen was one of the most memorable movie moments of the decade – hey, a scene doesn’t win two Golden Schmoes for nothing! For Garfield, that scene gave him the opportunity to let loose, something he couldn’t do when he was a full-time Spidey.
As detailed in the book “Spider-Man: No Way Home – The Art of the Movie” (yet another fantastic coffee table book from Marvel Universe), Andrew Garfield noted, “I felt like the pressure was off, and I was given a lot of freedom to explore and be the irreverent version of the character that I always felt a connection to — to be messy and free and playful and silly. It just felt like a very free, healing experience.” For this feeling, Garfield credits Holland, then in his seventh outing as Spider-Man. “And that was probably a lot to do with Tom. Tom had to carry that movie. Me and Tobey just got to show up and support him and have some fun.”
For his part, Tobey Maguire – who played Peter Parker in Sam Raimi’s trilogy and has been subject to his own memes (albeit not as flattering) – also previously commented on his surprise outing as Spider-Man, saying he was grateful but incredibly nervous.
Andrew Garfield also noted that the opportunity to reprise Spider-Man alongside those of past and present had a philosophical element to it as well. “On a fan level — which I am — and on an actor level, being able to work with my Spider-Man, Tobey, and then the brilliant Tom. Then, on an even deeper level of, well, what does that mean? What can we explore about these three brothers who are separated through time and space?”
