The Soul Eater: Virginie Ledoyen stars in Maury and Bustillo’s Alexis Laipsker adaptation

Date:

Virginie Ledoyen stars in The Soul Eater, the latest film from Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo. Based on the Alexis Laipsker novel

The French filmmaking duo of Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo caught international attention with their debut feature, the brutal home invasion story Inside, in 2007. Since then, Maury and Bustillo have continued working in the horror genre, making the films Livid, Among the Living, Leatherface (a prequel to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre), Kandisha, and The Deep House. Now Maury has taken to Instagram to announce that they have officially started production on their seventh feature, an adaptation of the Alexis Laipsker novel The Soul Eater (a.k.a. Le mangeur d’âmes). Laipsker also celebrated the start of production, tweeting out a promotional image that reveals The Soul Eater stars Virginie Ledoyen (The Beach), Paul Hamy (The Ornithologist), and Sandrine Bonnaire (Women at War). You can take a look at that image at the bottom of this article.

Maury shared an image of a clapperboard that reveals the cinematographer on The Soul Eater is Simon Roca, who previously worked with the directors on Kandisha.

The Soul Eater has the following synopsis: “He didn’t scream. They never scream.” Some well-kept secrets sometimes turn out to be too heavy to bear… When the disappearance of children and bloody murders multiply in a small mountain village, an old legend shrouded in sulphur reappears… Commander Guardiano and Captain of the Gendarmerie De Rolan are forced to join forces to uncover the truth.

The Soul Eater sounds interesting to me, and I was so blown away by Inside back in the day that I will always be interested in hearing what Maury and Bustillo are up to. I haven’t seen a few of their movies yet, and I wasn’t very enthusiastic about the two others I have seen (Leatherface and The Deep House), but I’ll always be rooting for them to have the sort of success they had with Inside again. And I will be watching Livid, Among the Living, and Kandisha one of these days.

Are you a fan of Maury and Bustillo’s work, and are you looking forward to seeing what they do with Virginie Ledoyen, Paul Hamy, and Sandrine Bonnaire on this one? Let us know how The Soul Eater sounds to you – and if you have read the Alexis Laipsker novel – by leaving a comment below.
